Stuckey’s is happy to announce that we are now carrying a line of jawbreaker candy from Sconza Candy of Oakdale, CA. Like Stuckey’s, Sconza Candy is a family business with an interesting history.

Dreaming the American Dream

Picture the scene: It’s 1922 and a 17-year-old Italian boy named Vincenzo Sconza arrives at Ellis Island. He has $20 in his pocket and his head is full of the American dream. Young and ambitious, Vincenzo makes his way across America, finally settling in Oakland, California, by the end of the year. Once there, he gets a job at a pasta factory.

At night, however, Vincenzo keeps himself busy in his kitchen working on his dream. You see, young Vincenzo wants to be a candymaker, and every evening, there he is standing over the stove, stirring the pots and pans, trying out his sweet ideas.

Dreams Really Can Come True

By 1939, the neighborhood is abuzz about his mouth-watering peanut brittle. Local dimes stores are demanding Vincenzo supply them with his delicious confections. It’s plain now what Vincenzo has to do. There would be no more making pasta. He quits his job at the factory and realizes his dream by opening his own candy shop — Sconza Candy.

Germany’s own Renaissance man, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, once wrote: “Dream no small dreams for they have no power to move the hearts of men.” Vincenzo certainly dreams no small dreams as Sconza Candy exceeds even his wildest dreams in Oakland’s East Bay neighborhood. As a result, Vincenzo returns to his kitchen and dreams up new candies — Jordan almonds, jawbreakers, and French burnt peanuts, to name a few — as he uses his wife and kids as taste testers.

Keeping the Dream Alive

In 1960, Vincenzo is joined by his son, and it seems that the proverbial (candy) apple doesn’t fall from the tree. The two join forces to create fruit and nut confections, after-dinner mints, and hard candies for Christmas. By 2008, even the grandkids have gotten in on the dream. As it grows bigger, they move the company 80 miles east to Oakdale, CA, a region known for its plentiful fruit orchards. This means fresher ingredients for the Sconza Candy’s delicious sweets.
